What the Lord had in mind

And behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's and smote off his ear. Matthew 26:51

It was a deliberate act. Can you imagine retelling a story and going into such detail, then he stretched out his hand slightly adjusting his feet for perfect footing to slash off the dudes ear. No this is an act to be brought under the eye of inspection. So lets practice, like I began with, IT WAS A DELIBERATE ACT. Peter had already stated he was willing to die for the Lord Jesus and Jesus had replied, Really, before the rooster awakens the town with two crows you will have denied me three times. So we can see the stretching out his hand as a fleshly fulfilling of Peters word. He did have the natural power to lay down his life. He is not concerned with the fight that will end him and his friends. THIS IS LEVEL ONE-die in your own understanding. The entire world operates in this, wars are fought like this, nations glamourize this as patriotism, even if they started the war for a leader who thinks himself a god.Peter  has turned off the self preservation mode. But he doesn't know what he doesn't know. The severed ear represents everything that dies in that state. A hunk of flesh, a pile of potential. A lost one.
What the Lord had in mind was to take that natural energy, that misaligned self confident plan and turn it into a conception. Peter died by the sword just as the Lord had said,'' Everyone who takes(lives by) the sword shall perish with the sword. But, '' THERE WAS NO BODY TO BURY. There was surrendering to something he never knew existed. Godly sorrow. Life, inspired mourning, he faced his greatest failure denying the one he thought he would die for. Failure of his own ability. INSERT YOU and your sin filled life here. REPENT.Conversion came(comes) now, he will walk in a new power, one he knows nothing about. A power that keeps banging into his old understanding of what the world taught and what he now knows to be the truth. Why did John stop at the door of the empty tomb and Peter ran right in? Peter knew there would be no body. Jesus died for our sins. Your cries are of regret just as Peters were.
